Rupa & the April Fishes
Rupa & the April Fishes
Back from a whirlwind world tour spanning North America, Europe and Asia, Rupa & the April Fishes will bring their global alternative sound home to San Francisco in time to mark the rising awareness around ending violence towards women in 2013. Collaborating with LA's hot new son jarocho/hip hop mestizo group Las Cafeteras and working in conjunction SF's annual Walk Against Rape, this show will be part-art installation, part-springtime activation and part-groove manifestation.

Whether singing in French, Spanish, English, Romany, Tzotzil or Hindi, the April Fishes' sound is “ecstatic and powerfully evocative” (LA Times) led by Rupa’s voice, which is “saucy, mysterious, and comparable in power to the late Amy Winehouse” (BUST Magazine). Their latest album BUILD, called “soulful and sensuous” by Relix Magazine, was produced with Todd Sickafoose (Ani DiFranco, Andrew Bird) and shows off the breadth of the band's diverse chops. Joining them onstage at this special hometown performance will be Todd Sickafoose on bass and master electronic artist JHNO on viola and beats.
Las Cafeteras’ energetic performances fuse Afro-Mexican (son jarocho), hip hop, folk, native american & more styles in English & Spanish. They use their performances to inspire social change. They’ve opened for Ozomatli, Aterciopelados, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes, Lila Downs, & more. Their debut album “It’s Time” has been featured on NPR, KCRW & the LA Times.
Las Cafeteras
Las Cafeteras sprouted in 2006 as students who enjoyed free Son Jarocho classes & decided to share the magic of this folk music from Southern Veracruz with the public. Since then their sound has evolved & they've played at community centers, churches, schools, museums, parties, protests, youth conferences, theaters, festivals, weddings, & art exhibits.
