Big Sam's Funky Nation
Big Sam's Funky Nation

Hailing from New Orleans as the former trombone player of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Big Sam always entertains audiences with his exhilarating brand of high-voltage funk, rock, jazz, and hip-hop, termed “Noladelic Powerfunk.” The San Francisco Chronicle asserts “[Big Sam is] the top man on the slide trombone in the birthplace of jazz.”
Accompanying Big Sam are Andrew Baham on Trumpet/Vocals, Andrew Block on Guitar, Chocolate MILK on Drums and Eric Vogel on Bass. Together, BIG SAM’S FUNKY NATION engages and delights audiences across the country with their high energy performance and showmanship. Big Sam’s Funky Nation has wowed crowds at major festivals and events, including the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Austin City Limits, Bonnaroo, Gathering of the Vibes, SXSW, Jam Cruise and countless others. According to the Associated Press, “Big Sam’s Funky Nation, one of New Orleans’ most energetic brass bands, had a crowd of thousands on its feet at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.” BSFN has also been featured on "LIVE! with Regis & Kelly," and more recently, in HBO's original series, "Treme," where the band performs one of their songs for a Mardi Gras event, and Big Sam plays himself in multiple episodes, including scenes with Elvis Costello and Allen Toussaint as they recorded the acclaimed Grammy-nominated album, River in Reverse.
Though the band is continuously on the road, playing major music festivals and venues nationwide and abroad, BIG SAM’S FUNKY NATION is also available for private engagements such as weddings, campus events, and corporate functions. A Big Sam show is one not to be missed, and one that your audience will talk about for ages to come.
Con Brio
Con Brio
Powered by the strikingly soulful vocals of Xandra Corpora, San Francisco’s Con Brio (“with vigor, or spirit”) blends old-school grit with new-school sophistication for a sound that’s wholly their own. The instrumentation is timeless: saxophone and trumpet roll over thick organ grooves while electric guitar, upright bass and drums keep heads nodding and the dance floor moving. A lesser singer could be forgiven for getting lost in the mix, but Corpora stands out. Her rich and powerful voice is the first thing to grab you, but it is the raw honesty and sincerity of the lyrics that stay with you long after the club goes dark or the record stops spinning.

Not surprisingly, there’s a loyal (and constantly growing) legion of fans who turn up to get down at every Con Brio show, and the sextet doesn’t disappoint; each performance is hot, heavy and different from the last. Combining raw talent, a dynamic stage presence and spontaneous style with a professional polish usually seen in much more veteran ensembles, the band is tight and energetic — and when it comes to spirit, they’ve got it in spades.

After forming in 2009, Con Brio immediately took to the stage and the studio, with a heavy schedule of local shows and the recording of their debut album. 2010 saw the release of From The Hip in front of a sold out crowd at Cafe Du Nord in San Francisco, and a relentless gigging schedule alongside many of the Bay Area’s finest acts. In 2011, the band ramped up their regional touring, with shows from Seattle to San Diego, and higher-profile concerts in San Francisco including performances at The Great American Music Hall, The Independent and Regency Ballroom (as part of SFWeekly’s All Shook Down Festival). The next year promises to be an even busier one for Con Brio, with the release of their live album, a return to the studio for a second full-length studio album, and their first national tour.
